Details about the new laboratory

The new Advanced and Collaborative Engineering Laboratory will train both GM’s supplier base as well as university students and other engineers. Per GM Authority, the automaker has planned two phases for the lab’s development. Phase 1 will consist of creating 12 work stations, while Phase 2 will add on 10 more work stations.

The work stations will host a variety of software used in the industry. However, the three main softwares will be CAM (Manufacturing Aided Engineering), CAD (Computer Aided Design), and CAE (Computer Aided Engineering).

Equipping the engineers of tomorrow

GM’s opening of the new laboratory pays homage to the success of its partnership with Arkansas State University that it initiated about one year ago. Per GM Mexico president and CEO Ernesto M. Hernandez, this collaboration has trained 4,000 members of the company’s chain of suppliers.

Chairman of the Arkansas State University Queretaro campus, Ricardo Gonzalez expressed confidence in the current and future success of the institution’s collaboration with GM. He believes the alliance will continue to leverage “the specialized knowledge of [the university’s] partners and the latest generation technology […] to develop the talent that will create the engineering products of the future.”

Concluding thoughts

As GM and other automakers develop new vehicles and technologies, the automotive engineering field should continue to thrive. The Bureau of Labor Statistics claims that the employment of mechanical engineers is set to grow 9 percent from 2016 to 2026.

Given this growing need for this job role, GM’s collaboration with the Arkansas State University is a smart move. We wish the Queretaro campus the best of luck as it leverages the new CAD laboratory to equip the next wave of automotive engineers.
