The GM Powertrain Thailand diesel engine plant in Rayong celebrated a key milestone in August with the production of its 500,000th engine. The first General Motors engine plant in the world to build the four-cylinder Duramax turbo-diesel engine, GM Powertrain Thailand hits the half-million-engine mark just shy of eight years into its existence.

First opened on Sept. 9, 2011, GM Powertrain Thailand currently builds the 2.5-liter Duramax and 2.8-liter Duramax engines used globally in the Chevrolet Colorado and Trailblazer. These efficient and capable engines leverage a variable-geometry turbocharger, integrated oil cooling, and aluminum cylinder heads for superior balance and performance, helping drive the popularity of both the Colorado and Trailblazer in Thailand and in international markets. Over 20 percent of all Duramax turbo-diesel engines built at GM Powertrain Thailand in 2018 were exported.

“[The Duramax engines] are one of the most important components that we manufacture in Rayong for both domestic and export markets,” said newly appointed President of GM Southeast Asia Hector Villarreal. “Reaching half a million engines is not only an important milestone for the GPS team but also for everyone at GM Thailand.”

The plant is a significant part of GM’s global manufacturing effort, and in its effort to manufacture in a more sustainable fashion. GM Powertrain Thailand — one of 142 GM facilities worldwide that operates landfill-free — earned recognition for conservation at the Prime Minister’s Industry Awards of 2018 and the Thailand Energy Award 2017 for Energy Conservation. It was also named the winner of the Best Safety Culture Award for its employee-friendly practices.

“We are a world-class facility, we need to keep the momentum by staying together as a team and making quality the number-one principle in everything we do today and in the future,” said GM Thailand Vice President of Manufacturing Amnat Saengjan.
