GM’s LGBT Workplace Equality Policies Earn It a 100%

The Human Rights Campaign (HRC) just released its 2015 Corporate Equality Index (CEI), an annual report that denotes how well 1,000 major US corporations cater to their employees with an LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender) background. Thanks to GM’s LGBT workplace equality policies, The General achieved a perfect score.

Of the nearly 1,000 businesses examined (including all Fortune 500 companies), only 366 earned a 100%. This is a troubling number, as a 100% indicates companies that do not discriminate in terms of benefits—important benefits, like medical, dependent care, and retirement—for domestic partners, while marriage equality is still being fought out in courts across the country. It also indicates that a company boasts non-discrimination workplace protections, transgender-inclusive health care benefits, and active engagement with the LGBT community. That around 65% of this country’s major companies did not achieve 100% is a sign of how much we still have to grow as a nation.

For the last seven out of eight years, General Motors has been among the top companies for LGBT workers.

“A diverse workforce and customer base is the cornerstone of our future, and this achievement is a reflection of our dedication to a genuine focus on LGBT employees and consumers,” said Ken Barrett, GM’s Chief Diversity Officer.
