Recently, we mentioned that the U.S. is considering 15 hyperloop routes to offer a faster mode of public transportation to consumers. Hyperloops are gradually becoming a reality overseas, as well. Just last year, Hyperloop Transportation Technologies (HTT) debuted its first full-size passenger capsule at an event in Spain.

This week brought more updates on the hyperloop front. In an interview with CNBC, HTT CEO Dirk Ahlborn revealed two important goals for the company for 2019 and beyond.

Two goals for the future

First of all, HTT is currently working on two passenger capsules similar to the one it revealed in Spain, CNBC has confirmed. 2019 promises to be a year of pushing the boundaries of its research and development efforts.

Secondly, Ahlborn stated that the company is expecting to open the first commercial lines to the public by 2022. While that deadline might seem ambitious to some, it’s relatively feasible considering the context of the auto and transportation industries. Both fields are actively developing speedier, more eco-friendly transportation such as electric vehicles. It makes sense that technology such as hyperloops should also materialize in the coming years as companies seek to push the boundaries of conventional transit.

The biggest obstacle for hyperloop

Per Ahlborn, the most pressing roadblock for hyperloops is the regulatory framework required for establishing them. Hyperloops are such a new technology that cities currently lack the infrastructure to accommodate them. We anticipate more details ahead as progressive companies like HTT work around the infrastructure dilemma and move closer to opening commercial lines for the public.
