How about this for a paradox? The old military-inspired, gas-guzzling Hummer might make a comeback — as an electric vehicle.

As GM embraces electrification and the growing demand for tough SUVs, the automaker is considering resurrecting some of its classic vehicles. Since the Hummer became something of a symbol of gas-guzzling excess, electrification would be a shocking way to rebrand the vehicle.

The history of Hummer

GM acquired the Hummer brand in 1998. Later, Arnold Schwarzenegger’s love for the vehicles launched the SUV to superstardom. Demand for the Hummer peaked in 2006, although rising gas prices and growing environmental awareness ultimately brought sales to a halt. After its bankruptcy in 2009, GM retained the brand but retired the marque in 2010. However, since today’s drivers crave the brawn-and-bling combination found in many GM vehicles, a rebooted Hummer might be a good fit for the market.

Rumors of revival

Despite his affection for the Hummer brand, GM President Mark Reuss hasn’t committed to rebooting the brand. Reuss is currently seeing more potential in electrified versions of the Chevrolet Suburban, Cadillac Escalade, the GMC Sierra, Yukon, and the automaker’s many off-road capable trucks.

GM is looking to put 20 EV models on the road by 2023, ranging from cars and crossovers to trucks and full-size SUVs. Who knows what the future will bring?
