Gentex, a company that creates automotive mirrors, is developing iris-scanning rearview mirrors that knows who you are at a glance.

Your iris is almost as unique as your DNA, and your iris will change very little over the span of your life so once you scan in once, you’re in the system. Forever.

Don’t Forget: Essential items to bring when you’re buying a car

Of course, the iris-scanning system has perks and doesn’t just keep your info for no reason. For starters, all of your personal cabin settings will change when you’re in the wheel compared to a family member. No more having to adjust the seat or busting your eardrums after a previous someone sets the volume too high.

If you’re a parent, you’ll be glad to know that you can set Teen Driver settings to automatically engage when a newer driver gets behind the wheel.

Now for the dystopian side of things: The iris scanning system will also act like an A.I. assistant by keeping tabs on where and when you stopped for gas, purchase history, where you were going on such and such date. Remember localized info of what temperature you like is fine, but when it comes to acting like a search history that shows everywhere you’ve been and what you’ve done in the car, it quickly turns bad.

All of this information about you won’t be local either. It’ll probably be in some sort of cloud, ready for hacking. Gentex seems to have a lot of smart people working there, so we hope that they’ll realize the importance of a beefed up cyber security. It’s not the only company creating cameras that watch you tough.

Gentex says the technology is in the works but still several years away from being released, not until 2025 or so when the brave new world of autonomous cars hits.
