The evolution of the MINI Clubman
In the days of yore, MINI was synonymous with cars that were, well, mini. Nowadays, MINI’s lineup is bigger than ever, while still remaining true to the brand’s roots and original styling. Recently, the automaker debuted a refreshed 2016 Clubman at the Frankfurt Motor Show, and it was looking bigger than ever before.
The 2016 MINI Clubman
The new Clubman rides on a larger chassis—10 inches longer and a little over five inches wider than its predecessor. The six-door (yes, six) wagon will now fit four adult-sized passengers comfortably, with room for a fifth, smaller passenger in the middle of the rear seat. The Clubman is based on the same platform as the BMW 2 Series Active Tourer.
Although longer and wider, the 2016 Clubman retains classic MINI styling, from the round headlights and bulldog-like front end to the two-tone paint job and boxy shape. The 2016 Clubman will feature the same engine lineup as the Cooper model—a turbocharged three-cylinder and a turbocharged four-cylinder. The Clubman also receives BMW’s eight-speed Steptronic transmission, although the six-speed manual is still available.
No word on when we can expect to see the 2016 Clubman at dealerships, but it’ll likely be in the first quarter of next year.
