We’re approaching the real end of an era with precious few opportunities left to be disappointed by your inability to purchase a Ford GT supercar. One of the very last reservations was up for grabs this month at the Petersen Automotive Museum’s 25th anniversary gala, giving one lucky so-and-so the chance to help ride this incredible car off into the sunset.

The allotment for a 2020-22 Ford GT went up on the auction block at the gala on Oct. 5. While no winner was announced, it can be pretty well assumed that they paid a hefty sum for the prize. (To give you some idea, a 2017 Ford GT Heritage Edition sold at the Barrett-Jackson Las Vegas auction this month to the tune of $1.54 million, and a Liquid Blue Ford GT sold at auction in 2018 for $2.5 million.) On the upside, whatever was paid went entirely to the Petersen Automotive Museum Foundation, the nonprofit aimed at providing STEAM-based education and programs for kids.

The winner didn’t just have the chance to pick from the 2020, 2021, and 2022 model years — they also got to specify it to their preference, including opting for a super-limited Heritage Edition or Carbon Edition. To ensure that John Cena wouldn’t place the winning bid and then cause another legal kerfuffle, Ford made it clear that “The allocation is solely for the winning bidder and may not be transferred.” The winning bidder also had to meet eligibility requirements. One could only assume that means 1.) money 2.) lots of it 3.) not John Cena.

In addition to the auction, the “Celebrating Silver, Going for Gold” gala honored Ford and the Ford family.

“As our biggest fundraiser of the year, the evening promises to be an exciting night for all,” said Petersen Automotive Museum Executive Director Terry L. Karges. “We’re grateful for Ford’s contribution to this year’s gala. The winning bidder will enjoy this extremely rare opportunity as well as make a significant impact on our community.”

And enjoy it I’m sure they will.
