The winters are exceptionally harsh in Quebec, making driving a heightened hazardous endeavor, which is why the province requires drivers to have winter tires on their vehicles. The mandate designed to help reduce accidents in severe weather and effective since 2008, usually goes into effect on December 15, but this year, drivers will have less time to prep their cars for winter weather.

According to Driving.ca writer Nadine Filion, drivers must equip their vehicles by the first day of December.

“For now, Quebec is the only province — beside some mountainous parts of British Columbia — to impose a mandatory winter tire rule for all licensed vehicles. Disregard, and it’s a $200 to $300 fine (plus fees). And if your car has a plate issued from another province? Well, you’re exempt,” reports Filion.

Ontario, which boasts the highest population for Canadian provinces and endures the wrath of Mother Nature during winter as well, isn’t under a mandate. To find out why, Filion reached out to Bob Nichols, communication director for the Ministry Transportation of Ontario.

“Due to effective snow-clearing operations and the fact that not all vehicles need to be operated every day under winter weather conditions, winter tire use remains at the discretion of Ontario’s vehicle owners,” according to Nichols. “Although Ontario has not made winter tires mandatory, it has taken other steps to encourage their use in the province. For example, effective January 1, 2016, all Ontario automobile insurers were required to offer a discount in respect of automobiles equipped with winter tires.”
