In each month of 2014, Mercedes has logged record sales in the United States. By that metric, May Mercedes-Benz sales were business as usual, with 29,570 units sold across the Mercedes-Benz, Sprinter, and smart brands. The 8.1 percent year-over-year increase marked a fifth consecutive month of record sales growth and puts the automaker well on pace to retain its title as America’s preferred luxury automaker in 2014.
“With five record months on the books for 2014,” said Stephen Cannon, president and CEO of MBUSA, “we continue to accelerate thanks to the strength of our product offering and our dealer network’s laser focus on the customer experience.”
The Mercedes-Benz brand was up 7.7 percent with total retail sales of 26,617 units. The E-Class was the volume leader with 6,168 vehicles sold, a 25.1 percent year-over-year increase; the C-Class was the second most popular line with 5,284 vehicles sold; and the M-Class was up 26.9 percent with 4,084 units sold.
The S-Class continued its 2014 roll in May with another month of double-digit year-over-year gains. Mercedes sold 2,173 S-Class vehicles, up 82.6 percent for the month, and put the high-end lineup 76 percent ahead of its 2013 pace.
M-Class, G-Class, and GLK-Class vehicles also enjoyed double-digit sales gains with increases of 26.9 percent, 33.9 percent, and 26.7 percent, respectively.
Mercedes-Benz CPOs were also up 46.3 percent after moving 11,870 vehicles throughout the month of May. To date, MBCPO vehicles are up 20.4 percent over sales through May of 2013.
Mercedes-AMG models were up 79.9 percent year-over-year with 964 vehicles sold. Sales Mercedes-Benz BlueTEC diesel models totaled 1,496 in May and are up 5 percent over the first five months of 2013.
Sprinter was also up 23.9 percent in May (2,264 units) while the smart brand fell off 15.8 percent with sales of 689 units.
