Meet Ford’s Survival: The Robot from the Future is Here
If you thought Judgment Day would never happen, think again. It’s our fate.
Relax: Ford has got you covered with its certified pre-owned inventory
Ford’s Survival, a self-driving robot at its manufacturing plants in Europe, is a reminder to us that the future is now.
Survival comes with an automated shelf with 17 slots to store items of different sizes and weights. Operators can only access the slots that Ford assigns to them.
Ford sees the robot as a perfect team member that it will likely roll out to other locations, if things continue to go off without a hitch.
The robot gets its name from its adaptable nature in different environments. Its abilities include — but are not limited to — delivering parts around the factory, going around obstructed areas, stopping at drop-off points, and dodging unexpected objects.
While it may be a robot, Survival never needs to stop and ask for directions. Its manufacturers in Valencia, Spain, designed it to map out the entire plant floor it is on.
One may think that an intelligent robot like this one could cut down on jobs. However, Ford is only using Survival to free up other employees for more demanding duties.
Job productivity could go through the roof, if Ford wanted to utilize its self-driving robot in that way. Survival can accomplish 40 hours of work each day, if given the permission to do so.
The thought of humans working with smart robots seems like an unlikely pairing, but teamwork does make the dream work.
