Mitsubishi Outlander Sport to Ditch Manual Transmission for the 2020 Model Year

There’s a lot to look forward to with the 2020 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport. The new Outlander Sport model has a refreshed exterior look and plenty of engine options.

One thing that the Outlander Sport won’t have, however, is a manual transmission.

The current iteration of the Outlander Sport does offer a manual transmission offer to drivers. However, Mitsubishi reports that only 2 percent of Outlander customers opt for the transmission configuration.

As such, when it came time to update the Outlander Sport, Mitsubishi decided to eliminate the manual transmission offering for the vehicle.

Manual transmissions have been disappearing from vehicles for several years now. Most drivers are now accustomed to either automatic transmissions or continuously variable transmissions (CVTs).

Fortunately, the 2020 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport will not lose its two engine options. The first is a base 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, which is capable of producing 148 horsepower. The second available engine is a 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine, which is capable of producing 168 horsepower.

The Outlander Sport will also continue to offer both front-wheel and all-wheel drive configurations to drivers. Both drivetrains will have power sent to them via a custom CVT.

What is changing for the Mitsubishi Outlander Sport is its exterior. The Outlander Sport model now bars Mitsubishi’s signature Dynamic Shield grille design, and projects an overall more rugged look.

For most Mitsubishi Outlander Sport customers, the loss of the manual transmission will not even be noticed. Still, for the 2 percent of Outlander Sport customers who did opt for the manual, it’s one less vehicle where they can find their preferred transmission configuration.
