Mitsubishi was known as a purveyor of turbocharged engines in the 1980s and 1990s, but it turned away from this a bit over the years. Now, it looks like the Japanese carmaker wants to get back into turbocharged engines.
During a make meeting earlier this month, Mitsubishi executives gave the carmaker’s dealers a glimpse at a series of turbocharged engines it plants on introducing in the future. The first of these is a 1.5-liter engine that will make its debut in a new mid-sized crossover, which will roll onto dealerships in 2018.
A Lineup of SUVs: Find out about Mitsubishi’s SUV-oriented plan
The crossover is meant to slot into the lineup between the next-generation Outlander Sport and the Mitsubishi Outlander. Despite the fact that the brand only sells around 100,000 models per year in the United States, it is still the biggest market for Mitsubishi—making it the perfect market to invest in.
Along with the 1.5-liter, Mitsubishi executives said that the brand is also considering a turbocharged 1.1-liter engine for the newest Mirage and Mirage G4 subcompact. There will also be a larger turbocharged engine for the next-generation Outlander crossover. Each of these new engines will arrive on the market by 2019.
The Future for Mitsubishi: Learn more about Mitsubishi’s future plans
During the meeting with its dealers, Mitsubishi also explained that the brand is planning to increase its marketing budget for 2016 and encouraged its dealers to increase their local and regional advertising.
It looks like the brand is on its way up in the United States. It’s going to be interesting to see what the turbocharged engines do for Mitsubishi’s future sales.
