There are plenty of reasons that people are getting all excited about the impending launch of the 2015 Ford Mustang. Granted, airbags was probably not among those things, but Ford’s announcement of a new airbag design that will debut in the new Mustang is actually quite a bit more exciting than you’d think.

This new airbag design includes a new knee-protecting airbag that integrates an inflatable plastic bladder into the glove box door. The design is said to be 65 percent lighter and far more discreet than traditional passenger-side airbags.

“We provide a high level of safety, quality and design for our customers and their passengers,” said Sean West, Ford restraints manager. “With this innovative airbag design, we have developed technology that provides protection for vehicle occupants while also reducing weight and enabling greater design flexibility.”

Ford has been granted 15 patents on their new airbag design and have a number of patents pending with the USPTO. In making the 2015 Mustang the most technologically-advanced ever built, the engineers at Ford have made it the safest ‘Stang ever made by doubling the amount of standard airbags (with the inclusion of side curtain airbags in the fastback and seat-mounted head airbags in the convertible), adding two front crash sensors and a roll rate sensor in the restraint control module, and including safety belt pretensioners.
