Next BMW Art Car Announced

Cao Fei John Baldessari BMW Art Car

BMW demonstrates its commitment to the arts as often as possible. One of its biggest projects has been the BMW Art Car program. Introduced in 1975, the first Art Car was a painted BMW 3.0 CSL from American artist Alexander Calder. To date, 17 BMW vehicles have been painted with bright colors and fine details.

The next BMW Art Car will celebrate the 40th anniversary of the project, and will be a collaboration, the first in Art Car history. Cao Fei and John Baldessari will join forces to create a piece of art out of the BMW M6 GT3. The two artists were chosen by a panel of museum directors and curators. Cao Fei, of China, is the youngest Art Car artist ever chosen. Conversely, American artist John Baldessari will be the oldest artist to work on the BMW project.

The first BMW Art Car

The artists will work together over a year to create the art car and finalize the design. After it is completed, the new vehicles will be sent to museums around the world. The announcement was made at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York City, so it is probably a safe bet that one of the vehicles will make its way there.
