Chevrolet Volt
Industry insiders are telling the good folks at Edmunds that the next-gen 2016 Chevy Volt plug-in hybrid will debut sometime next year. Rumors abound that the new Volt will be restyled (though not dramatically so), offered on a front-wheel drive platform, boast a new three-cylinder turbo engine, and might be able to achieve a 200 mile range on a single charge while carrying a generator.
The current model year Volt has a 1.4-liter four-cylinder engine that is mated to a generator in order to recharge the vehicle’s lithium-ion batteries. It’s capable of running entirely on electricity for up to 38 miles, and it has a 360 mile range with a full tank of gas and a full charge.
Cleantechnia mostly dismisses the rumors of a 200-plus-mile increase in driving range, projecting that the 2016 Chevy Volt will likely up its electric-only capability to more than 50 miles. Even still, an electric-only driving range in the low- to mid-fifties is a considerable leap from the current gen’s 38-mile range.
Short of saying that the next-gen 2016 Chevy Volt will premiere sometime in 2015, nobody seems committed to any particular event for the vehicle’s unveiling. Even money would suggest that the Volt has a presence at next year’s NAIAS, but only time will tell.
