We all know that Nissan is a Japanese brand, but when it comes to the United States, its roots are firmly in the Volunteer State. The headquarters of Nissan North America are in Nashville, and the company invests heavily in the area to facilitate quicker manufacturing and goodwill in the state. This month the automaker broke ground on a new facility in Decherd, Tennessee, that will train employees at the neighboring Decherd Powertrain Plant.

The new training center will be about 21,000 square feet and be able to train up to 180 Nissan employees at a time. Current plans include equipping it with the tools to train staff in engineering, production, maintenance, and management. If construction stays on schedule, the facility should be up and running this fall.

“This new training center underpins Nissan’s commitment to upskilling our workforce in advanced manufacturing technology, as well as our commitment to Franklin County,” said Brian Sullivan, vice president, Powertrain and Battery Operations, Nissan North America, Inc. “This is a great moment for Nissan Decherd, and we are excited about the future ahead.”

The existing Nissan Decherd Powertrain Plant puts together more than 1 million engines every year, earning it the title of the highest-volume powertrain plant in the country. Since opening in 1997, more than 13 million engines have rolled off the line, many of them bound for vehicles built in the Smyrna Assembly Plant in Tennessee and Canton, Mississippi.

Right now, Nissan’s Decherd facility builds engines for several Nissan and INFINITI vehicles. These include the INFINITI QX60, Nissan Maxima, Altima, pathfinder, Rogue, TITAN, and Frontier. With this new training center, we hope this opens the door to more opportunities for Decherd’s 1,700 employees.
