This time of year is when we all think about those who have less than us, and we are thankful for the blessings we have in our own life. To give back to its community, Nissan’s plant in Canton, Mississippi, came together to give back to the Mississippi Food Network’s BackPack Program.

The BackPack program helps to provide food to students who receive free or reduced lunches at school and may not have access to good food then whey are not at school. Nissan announced last week that it will donate $20,000 to help the program to expand its offerings to children from elementary school though junior high and pay for 4,000 backpack meals to be sent home with kids in need.

Besides the monetary donation, employees of the Canton Nissan plant spent their day on November 22nd volunteering with the organization, assembling more than 800 meal kits instead of their normal Nissan vehicles.

“Far too many children in Mississippi are at risk of going hungry each week. School meals are an important part of the solution, but they are not available every day. That is why the BackPack Program is so important, and supporters like Nissan enable us to help more kids,” said Charles H. Beady, CEO of the Mississippi Food Network.

Nissan and its Canton staff have given more than $80,000 to the Mississippi Food Network since 2006, and have no plans to stop contributing. More than 98% of its contributions have gone to help the BackPack Program, and that money has gone towards funding more than 15,800 meals this year. We look forward to seeing Nissan’s good works in its communities continue.
