The German Design Council, the entity behind the Automotive Brand Contest, has recognized the incredible, bizarre, and incredibly bizarre Opel GT Concept as its “Best of the Best” in the “Concepts” category of its annual awards. Opel also took home “Best of the Best” for its “Mission Astra” dealer event, which saw dealers become “Astranauts” in the Spanish Sierra Nevada to commemorate the launch of the eventual 2016 European Car of the Year, the Astra. Opel OnStar also took home two top prizes, one for “Future Mobility & Parts” and another in the “Digital” category.

Vice President of Opel/Vauxhall Design Mark Adams will accept the award for the Opel GT at the Paris Motor Show on September 29th.

“The GT Concept is a dream car that takes Opel’s philosophy ‘sculptural artistry meets German precision’ to the next level. The feedback has been simply overwhelming. My team and I are proud that our sportscar study is being honored as the best concept car of 2016 with the Automotive Brand Award,” said Adams.

“Mission Astra” was the launch event for the Opel Astra, which has since gone on to become a huge hit in Europe. The event saw 250 dealers spend two days in the Spanish Sierra Nevada living in futuristic tents as a means to emphasize the future-forward thinking of the Astra.

“We always want to offer our dealers something different and that is why we came up with a really unusual idea for the launch of the new Astra. With a tent-city next to a racetrack, which resembled a lunar landscape, we created an event that money actually cannot buy” said Opel Chief Marketing Officer, Tina Müller.

Opel OnStar also won the BusinessCar Techies Award for innovation in September of last year.
