Winter is a popular time for demolition derby events. It’s also a great time to raise awareness and funds for worthy causes. Austin, Minnesota, recently combined both passions during its annual Paint the Town Pink event. This year marked the ninth year of this series of local fundraisers held to promote awareness for breast cancer while raising funds to support research.

Austin hosted several events spanning from mid-January through early February, including a Hotdish Feed and Bean Bag Tournament, a polar bear plunge, Paint the Rink Pink, and Fishing for a Cure. The festivities culminated on Feb. 10 at the Mower County Fairgrounds, with the YMCA 5K Super Run followed by the Smashing Cancer Demolition Derby.

Fair Board Director John Mueller spoke of how successful the demolition derby part of Paint the Town Pink has been. This year marked the event’s sixth year. “We know our Mower County Fair fans love demolition derbies,” he said. “It’s been very successful.”
