Ford this week announced the various and sundry updates that make up the mid-cycle refresh of the Ford Explorer. Among other new features, the 2018 Explorer will be offered with a built-in Wi-Fi hotspot, SYNC Connect, new exterior color options, and a retouched face and rear.

There isn’t much that has changed with the exterior of the 2018 Ford Explorer worth noting outside of noting that it is…well…changed. The biggest difference for this model year will be the addition of five new wheel options and four new hues of paint: Burgundy Velvet Tinted Clearcoat, Cinnamon Glaze, Platinum Dune Tricoat, and Blue Metallic. Additionally, the Explorer Sport and Explorer Platinum equipped with the 3.5-liter twin-turbo EcoBoost V6 will feature new quad exhaust tips.
The biggest updates come on the inside, namely with the addition of an available 4G embedded modem that will provide high-speed Wi-Fi capabilities for up to 10 devices at once up to 50 feet away from the vehicle. This will enable the 2018 Explorer to take full advantage of SYNC Connect, which will allow drivers with the FordPass app to remotely start/stop, lock/unlock, and locate their Explorer.
The 2018 Ford Explorer will also be offered with a Safe and Smart Package, which bundles adaptive cruise control and collision warning with brake support, Blind Spot Information System, cross-traffic alert, lane-keeping system, rain-sensing wipers, and auto high-beams.
Ford also reaffirmed its plans to launch five new SUVs in North America by 2020, one of which will be a fully-electric utility vehicle with an estimated range of more than 300 miles.
“In the 1990s, SUVs defined the unstoppable American spirit, and once again, we’re seeing a utility boom take hold with a whole new generation of customers,” said Mark LaNeve, Ford vice president, U.S. marketing, sales and service. “Two sets of consumers—millennials and baby boomers—are driving this growth, and Ford will be ready with a full portfolio of SUVs to meet their needs.”
