[PHOTOS] Honda Clarity Fuel Cell Sedan Shines Bright at New York Auto Show

The next-generation of the Honda Clarity Fuel Cell sedan was showcased at this year’s New York Auto Show alongside the new Civic Hatchback

The Honda Clarity Fuel Cell sedan is scheduled to be released in California later this year

While the Civic Hatchback Prototype might have been the Honda vehicle that garnered the most attention at this year’s New York International Auto Show, the Japanese automaker also brought its new Clarity Fuel Cell sedan to the Big Apple.

There were no big presentations for the Clarity Fuel Cell sedan and no celebrities appeared to endorse the vehicle, but the next-generation Clarity features many new technological innovations, including a fuel cell stack which is 33% more compact than Honda’s previous offering, and it also comes with a 60% increase in power density.

The new Fuel Cell Vehicle (FCV) has also been equipped with Honda Sensing technology, which can autonomously engage the brakes and initiate emergency steering if it detects a potential collision or lane departure is imminent. Advanced safety technologies included on the sedan include adaptive cruise control, lane keeping assist, emergency braking, lane departure warning, road departure mitigation, and forward collision warning.

As for entertainment, the new Clarity will come with a floating 8-inch Display Audio touchscreen that’s compatible with both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. This system also provides control for the car’s Hydrogen station locator, energy monitor, and navigation.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has estimated the next-generation Clarity Fuel Cell sedan will provide a driving range of more than 300 miles, which is roughly 60 miles more than the previous model. Furthermore, the new Clarity Fuel Cell sedan will carry a starting MSRP of $60,000 and will cost approximately $500 a month in order to lease the FCV.

The new Clarity sedan is scheduled to become available at select dealerships in California later this year. The reason why it will only be available in California at first is because that’s one of the only areas with enough hydrogen-fueling stations to support the vehicle.
