To achieve recognition from the SAE Foundation, an engineer has to not only be excellent in their automotive engineering specialization but also committed to supporting teachers and students involved in STEM fields. The 2018 Annual Celebration itself, held at the Detroit Masonic Temple, was also a fundraiser for STEM and brought in about $300,000 in contributions from by attending top industry players, students, and volunteers.

Nissan itself has contributed over $2.5 million to the SAE Foundation over the years, including its contribution to the development of SAE’s A World Of Motion® primary learning source materials for STEM programs in grades K-3.

In his speech, José Muñoz acknowledged Nissan’s support of STEM education in the communities it serves. He also spoke about the influence STEM had in his own education.

“I know firsthand what a powerful difference a STEM education can make,” Muñoz said. “I was fortunate to have the chance to pursue my strong interest in the sciences – and engineering, in particular. I want to ensure that more young people have access to the same educational opportunities I benefitted from as a student.”
