Electricity is the future of motoring. DS agrees, which is why you can now get your DS 7 Crossback as a four-wheel-drive hybrid.

The DS 7 Crossback E-TENSE is a plug-in hybrid with an electric range of 31-miles and a thumping 296bhp and 330 lb-ft of torque to waft you along. It employs a 1.6 turbocharged petrol engine with 197bhp and two electric motors with a combined output of 99bhp to give you some serious shove to go with your space.

Around town, the DS 7 Crossback E-TENSE operates in Zero-emission mode (fully electric) without calling on the petrol engine. It will do this for up to 31-miles — which is more than enough range to pootle about and hop between shops.

You can recharge the battery in just two hours using a 6.6kw charging station. Most home charging stations are 7kw and the cost per kWh is around 14p, so a full charge will cost you a few quid. You’re literally talking about £5.

Hybrid drive

If you go on a longer trip, you can put the DS 7 Crossback E-TENSE into Hybrid mode. This uses both the electric and petrol powertrain and switches between them seamlessly depending on your speed and throttle input. There’s also a Sport mode which uses the electric motors and petrol engine together all of the time to extract as much performance as possible. If you need traction on slippery or rutted surfaces, there’s a special 4WD mode you can use which shifts torque between four wheels.

Thanks to its smooth and responsive e-EAT8 8-speed automatic transmission, making progress in the DS 7 Crossback E-TENSE is a pleasure. The powertrains are also very refined and certainly an upgrade over a clattering diesel.

Business as usual

Elsewhere, the DS 7 Crossback E-TENSE is business as usual. The standard DS 7 is an incredibly well made and high-end product. The plug-in is no different. The interior is bespoke with every shape inspired by diamonds. There’s diamond-faceted switches, diamond screen graphics, diamond stitching on the upholstery … you get the idea, and the effect of all this is a car that feels very, very classy.

Equipment, as you would expect, is generous. There’s a 12” HD touchscreen infotainment system, leather upholstery, heated front seats, LED headlights, DS CONNECTED PILOT for semi-autonomous driving, and importantly for comfort, DS ACTIVE SCAN SUSPENSION which analyses the road ahead and adjusts automatically. This clever suspension technology is why the DS 7 Crossback rides and handles so well for a big car.

Oh, and as for space? DS’s engineers have worked wonders because, despite the large battery pack and electric motors taking up space under the floor, the DS 7 Crossback E-TENSE has the same passenger space and boot space as the regular car. Which means you get a stonking 555-litre boot and space for five adult passengers. Interested? We don’t blame you. This car ticks all the right boxes. Orders are now open, and deliveries are expected to commence in Spring.
