Valentine’s Day is in the rearview mirror. Spring is (almost) in the air, as we’re just days away from March… It’s the perfect time to reflect on first dates and cars. Whether they’re past dates we remember fondly (or with awkward shudders) or the perfect first date that we’ve been daydreaming about, here are some of our car-related stories when it comes to the dating world.

I’m not one for dating, so let’s get whimsical and talk about a dream date scenario. I’d love to go for a spirited drive through the Australian outback in a customized yellow 1974 Ford Falcon XB sedan. Or if we’re being fantastical, why not take a spin in a delightfully freakish mechanical abomination, like a Howe and Howe Ripsaw EV1 chassis fitted with the body of a vintage Valiant Charger, or a jacked up, piggybacked pair of Cadillac Coupe DeVille models? Oh, wait, was I supposed to be talking about dating? Then I guess someone else can come along, too, as long as there’s neither Netflix nor chill.

I met this one girl at church a few years ago, and we decided to grab lunch afterward. I guess you could call this a spontaneous lunch date. After we had finished eating and talking, we walked out to the parking lot. She walked over to my car with her key fob in hand and started to open the driver’s side door. Obviously, this wasn’t going to work, as my key fob was the only one that could open it. In that moment, we realized that we drove the same car. And here I was hoping she just wanted to go home with me. Better luck next time, kid. At least we have a car lot in common.

While no one typically rides in their date’s vehicle on the first date anymore (because…CREEPERS!), I do have some recollections from the first time I set foot in my now-husband’s SUV. (In retrospect, I’ve realized that his vehicle had a lot of parallels with his personality.) He had a semi-ancient Saturn Vue in a classic black shade hinting that this guy was pretty traditional. The exterior was slightly beat-up with a few scars and lots of miles on it, but in overall great shape — which symbolized the myriad of experiences and travels its driver had accumulated over the years. The roomy interior indicated that this guy probably liked going to Home Depot for random home improvement supplies, and helping friends move houses from time to time.
