The Toyota Yaris Hybrid R Turns Heads in Frankfurt
Even though it’s just a concept, the Toyota Yaris Hybrid-R amazed when Toyota unveiled it at the Frankfurt Motor Show. This special version of the Yaris is basically a race car—its power comes from a 1.6L engine called a “Global Race Engine” and not one, not two, but three different electric motors. At the height of its performance, the Yaris Hybrid-R blitzes up to 420 horsepower.
Daniele Schillaci, Senior Vice President of Toyota Motor Europe, touted the car’s impressive numbers in a press conference. “We believe a car like this would have two modes – Track and Road,” Schillaci said. “In Track mode, the full 420hp would be available and all energy focused on delivering the best possible performance around a circuit, through short and intensive energy bursts. In Road mode, the Global Race Engine would have reduced power, and a lower amount of electrical energy would be deployed over longer periods for better fuel efficiency.”
Lamentably, the Toyota Yaris Hybrid-R is only a concept, so we’ll never get to drive one. But there’s hope that Toyota will implement some of the impressive technology showcased in the Hybrid-R in the future for market cars. “Whichever way it is used, this concept is a Hybrid that is sure to bring a smile to the face of its drivers,” Schillaci said. “But, as you know, our hybrid customers have been smiling for many years.” Give us something with the power of the Hybrid-R, and we’ll keep smiling for a long time.
