Mitsubishi is spotlighting “the most badass truck of all time” in what is possibly one of the most shamelessly grandiose commercials we have seen in a long time.
The ad is titled “Watermopylaegrad.” As this is a portmanteau of Waterloo, Thermopylae, and Stalingrad—three very famous large-scale battles in human history—that tells us just about everything we need to know about the ad before we even get to watching it.
It shows the latest Mitsubishi L200 Triton Sport pickup truck wading through a battlefield that mixes multiple genres grounded in reality and fantasy. Think Mad Max meets Game of Thrones meets Lord of the Rings meets Call of Duty.
By alluding to the historical battles in its name, the ad suggests that not even the greatest badasses in history were able to defeat it; in fact, they are seen recoiling from the L200 Triton Sport at the end of the ad when the latter does the equivalent of a bull pawing the ground before charging.
Before you ask—yes, the Mitsubishi L200 Triton Sport is not available in the United States. It’s a shame because Mitsubishi seems hell-bent on building only SUVs and small electrified vehicles here, while the Triton has been nearly universally well-received in every market it is sold.
The ad was made by Agência Africa for the automaker’s campaign in Brazil, where there apparently is an audience for battle scenes that involve cowboys, Vikings, tanks, choppers, road warriors, and bow-wielding tribesman chasing down a modern-day pickup truck.
Who are we kidding? There’s an audience for that everywhere.
