The 2019 Bloomington Gold Corvette show in Indianapolis will welcome three special models, including the Corvette Mako Shark and the Corvette Manta Ray.

The alleged creator of these vehicles is Bill Mitchell. The idea came to him when the shark mounted on his office’s wall intrigued him to incorporate the shark’s underbelly color on the bottom of the Corvette. This spawned the 1961 Mako Shark, which also featured a center hood fin, back flares, and a pointed nose.

In 1965, Mitchell took another stab at the shark-like Corvette concept and created the Manta Ray or Mako Shark II. This would end up being direct inspiration for the C3 Corvette.

Joining the two models at the June show is the Corvette SR-2, which takes character traits from the C1 Corvette. Zora Duntov and Harley Earl assembled it for Earl’s son, Jerry. Mitchell would get the second one made. It included a Smokey Yunick engine and bigger gas tank.

The Indianapolis Motor Speedway will be the hosting grounds for Bloomington Gold on June 20 with its conclusion on June 22.
