Three Things That Impact Engine Response

Skipping a cup of coffee for some humans can make them feel sluggish. Staying up too late to finish a great book or binge-watch a favorite series can make waking up for work or school akin to a nightmare. Just as these actions can impact the mental and physical response time of people, so do certain conditions, problems or issues impact the response time of your engine. Or in correct auto terms, the “throttle response,” according to How Stuff Works writer Jamie Page Deaton.

If your fuel filter is dirty or clogged, your car’s performance with suffer, notes Deaton. And it’s easy for the filter to get gunked up, since its job is to prevent sediment and impurities from getting into your car’s engine. A dirty filler will also cause your engine to sputter, have issues starting, and return reduced fuel economy, Deaton adds.

A faulty fuel pump could also contribute to your car’s inability to go as fast as you expect.

“Unlike a fuel filter, fuel pump problems are harder to fix,” according to Deaton. “You’re probably going to need to take your car to a mechanic, and oftentimes the only solution to a bad fuel pump is to replace it.”

If the fuel pump and fuel filter aren’t the culprits to your engine’s lagging response time, Deaton says it’s time to check the fuel lines.

“A leak of kink in your fuel lines, even a tiny one, can rob your engine of performance. Because the fuel lines won’t be able to maintain the pressure needed to transport the fuel through the lines, a car with a leaky fuel line won’t respond quickly to driver inputs,” reports Deaton.
