Toyota and its luxury sub-brand Lexus came up big in the 2019 Kelley Blue Book 5-Year Cost to Own Awards, with a total of seven vehicles ranked at the top of their respective segments, and Lexus taking home the “Best Luxury Brand” honor.

Each year, KBB determines the estimated cost to own a new car for five years based on a variety of factors, including fuel costs, insurance and state fees, projected resale values, and projected maintenance and repair costs.

“These results and the awards themselves provide powerful insights that can give you the upper hand when it comes to shopping for a new vehicle,” KBB wrote. “The 5-Year Cost to Own Awards are a valuable tool in making sure that you’re making an informed purchase that will pay dividends both now and over the years ahead.”

Toyota models topped three categories with the lowest estimated five-year cost to own. The Toyota Prius c led the charge in the hybrid car segment with a projected five-year cost to own of $31,932; the Tacoma led the midsize pickup truck segment with a projected five-year cost to own of $36,053; and the Tundra led the full-size pickup truck segment with a projected five-year cost to own of $45,920.

“If you own a truck, your expectation is that it’ll do everything you ask of it, without question and without issues,” KBB wrote. “The Toyota Tundra excels here, and does so at the lowest anticipated cost over a 5-year period.”

Additionally, the Toyota 4Runner (off-road SUV/crossover), Camry (midsize car), 86 (sports car), and Sienna (minivan) all finished in the top three in their respective segments.
