Yesterday for the twelfth year running, Toyota honored 100 high school graduates on across the United States with $1 million in Toyota scholarships.

Each of the recipients — all college-bound, high-school seniors — will receive between $5,000 and $20,000 to help cover post-secondary education costs.

“Through these scholarships, and the many others we support across the nation, we can help students reach their education and career goals,” said Al Smith, group vice president, Toyota Social Innovation. “This program represents an important piece of our overall commitment to creating opportunities for youth and investing in their development.”

They students also invited to celebrate the occasion — on what Toyota calls Toyota Scholars Day — at the company’s new headquarters in Plano, Texas, where they met with Toyota mentors, toured the new offices, and attended collegiate information session.

In addition to the scholarships, while at Toyota Scholars Day the graduates also received a backpack full of school supplies, including a new laptop.

Toyota says it selected the winners of its scholarship based on a combination of academic achievement, dedication to community service, and financial need. All of them participated in youth development programs that Toyota sponsors, and many belonged to local Boys & Girls Clubs of America.

“I attended Boys & Girls Club of East LA, which received support from Toyota,” said Ervin Zelaya, a past recipient of the scholarship and now a Toyota Financial Services marketing analyst. “From there, I obtained a Toyota scholarship and then an internship which allowed me to gain valuable career skills. I’m really grateful for the opportunities that Toyota has provided.”
