Toyota reported August 2019 sales of nearly 250,000 vehicles, marking an increase of 11.3 percent on a volume basis and of 7.4 percent on a daily selling rate basis compared to August of last year. The company’s Toyota division, which excludes Lexus-branded vehicles, did even better: With sales of 218,403 units, it achieved its best-ever August, up 8.3 percent over August 2018 on a DSR basis.

As you might expect from a record month, there were a lot of highlights for the brand. Prius sales were up 1.8 percent, achieving its own best-ever August; the Corolla was up 15.2 percent, and the Corolla Hatchback achieved a best-ever August as well; sales of the 86 sports car were up 11.3 percent, while Camry and Avalon sales were up 6.1 and 29.8 percent, respectively. All combined, this helped Toyota cars beat its August 2018 performance by 8.4 percent, including the sale of 643 all-new Supras.

But Toyota SUV sales were even better, up 17 percent in total compared to August 2018, primarily thanks to Sequoia sales being up early 43 percent. Toyota light trucks, including the Tundra and Tacoma, were also up 14.5 percent, marking not just their best-ever August but also their best-ever month. Finally, Toyota hybrid sales were up a whopping 68.3 percent, one of their best performances in a long time.

For Toyota to have such a good month in the context of an industry with largely plateauing sales could be notable, or perhaps it’s just a blip in the line chart. We’ll have to wait a few months to judge.
