Toyota Sales Same as Always in October

Toyota Motor North America is reporting October 2018 sales of 191,102 units, representing a 1.4 percent increase over October 2017 on a volume basis and down 2.5 percent on a daily selling rate basis.

Excluding the Lexus division, Toyota division sales reached 168,386 units, up 1.7 percent on a volume basis thanks to yet another strong SUV and pickup truck performance. In fact, it was Toyota’s best-ever October for light truck sales, totaling 109,073 units, up 8.3 percent on a volume basis and 4.3 percent on a DSR basis.

Toyota’s best performer was once again the RAV4, with just over 34,000 units sold — nearly identical sales as last October. The Highlander and 4Runner also surged to 20,548 and 12,624 units sold, respectively, and marking a 17.7 and 13.2 percent increase over last year, again respectively. That made it their best-ever October.

Tacoma pickup truck sales also increased 29.9 percent to 20,534, making it the fifth vehicle in the Toyota lineup to sell over 20,000 units. The remaining two are the Camry and Corolla at 26,914 and 22,020 units sold, respectively, showing that even though SUVs are all the rage, traditional family cars continue to perform well—at least for companies willing to give them a try and actually market them (sorry, Ford fans).

Still, it seems the industry is finally beginning to stagnate after several years of exceptional growth. Toyota is currently down 2.6 percent year-to-date compared to 2017 and isn’t likely to make up the difference in the next two months.
