Tomorrow marks the beginning of the 2016 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas. True to form, Toyota will demonstrate an SDL (SmartDeviceLink) integration in the Livio exhibit as part of a collaboration between the two companies and Ford that was announced last June. As part of the collaboration, the three companies will welcome any other automakers and app developers who want to join.
Toyota wants to help commercialize this technology so that drivers will be able to use apps safely in their vehicles via voice recognition function. As Shigeki Terashi, Executive Vice President of Toyota Motor Corporation, explained, “Developing a safer and more secure in-car smartphone connectivity service which better matches individual vehicle features is exactly the value and advantage an automaker can offer customers. We expect that many companies share our view and will participate in the industry SDL collaboration.”
With this new SDL technology, Toyota hopes to allow app developers to create apps that will work via multiple automakers’ telematics systems, rather than having to develop different software for each.
Toyota’s demonstration will commence on January 6th and run through the 9th. Additionally, Ken-ichi Murata, General Manager of Toyota BR Connected Strategy and Planning, will appear at the SDL Summit tomorrow, along with officials from Ford, Livio, and others, to deliver remarks and answer questions about the new system.
