The experts over at Consumer Reports have published their list of the top 10 cars of 2019 after having tested nearly 50 new cars and analyzed data for over 470,000 vehicles via its exclusive Auto Survey.

While factoring in performance, crash test results, reliability, fuel economy, and technology, Consumer Reports ultimately ranked four Toyota cars at the top of their respective segments, making the automaker by far the best represented in the top 10 list.

The Toyota Avalon Hybrid was ranked highest among large cars, the Toyota Camry Hybrid among midsize cars, the Toyota Yaris among subcompact cars, and the Toyota Prius among hybrid/electric cars.

Toyota really excels in terms of reliability” and safety, said Jake Fisher, senior editor of auto testing for Consumer Reports.

For the first time in 2019, only vehicles that included automatic emergency braking as standard equipment were considered for top picks. According to Consumer Reports, this is because they feel the benefits of AEB are so strong that it ought to be standard in all cars.

“Once a technology has been proven to reduce crashes and injuries, we push the industry to make it available to all car shoppers and not leave it as a pricey option,” Fisher explained. “Even the least-expensive car on this list has AEB standard. It’s time all new cars had it.”

The Japanese automaker was ranked ninth overall in the list of 33 tested brands, and third among non-luxury brands, while American competitors such as Ford, Chevrolet, and Jeep struggled to breach into the top 20.
