Watch in Awe as Vaughn Gittin Jr. Drifts the Nordschleife
The Nürburgring Nordschleife is arguably the world’s foremost proving grounds for performance vehicles and professional drivers. Every year, new vehicles are brought to the “Green Hell” to shoot for new records, but Formula Drift driver Vaughn Gittin Jr. had a different idea in mind when he brought his 900-horsepower Ford Performance 5.0 Aluminator drift car to the Nordschleife last month: Focusing on having a “good time, not a lap time.”
The result: Gittin became the first driver in history to traverse the nearly 13-mile track entirely by way of drifting. Sounds pretty impressive, right? Just wait until you see it in action — all seven, tire-squealing minutes of it.
Wanna Do Some Drifting of Your Own? The 2019 Ford Mustang’s just what the doctor ordered
“The Nordschleife is one of, if not, the most iconic track in the world and I have been in love with the danger and folklore of the famous ‘Green Hell’ at the Nürburgring since I can remember,” said Gittin. “I finally went there in person in 2013 and it was then that I made a promise to myself that one day I would return to drift it in its entirety.
“Drifting the Nürburgring represents the ultimate challenge to me: It is something that many question whether it would be possible and whether the car and driver could do it and come out in one piece. Something inside of me had to take this on to find out,” Gittin added.
Gittin previously attempted to drive the Nordschleife last fall but was unsuccessful. While this time out was a success, it came at a price: three sets of Nitto tires and a drone were destroyed in the making. Pour one out, y’all.
