Volvo has established a reputation for making cars that are strong and extraordinarily safe in traffic collisions over the past couple of decades, and the 2015 IIHS Top Safety Picks list shows that Volvo takes this reputation very, very seriously. So seriously, in fact, that the Swedish automaker announced a commitment called “Vision 2020” that says, “no one should be killed or seriously injured in or by a new Volvo car.”
The most recent IIHS crash tests show that Volvo is headed in the right direction with this bold vision with four vehicles honored with the Top Safety Pick+ rating: S60, S80, V60, and XC60. That makes Volvo the only brand from Europe with more than two vehicles on the 2015 Top Safety Pick+ list.
Combined with strong construction and well-planned engineering, Volvo has also taken advantage of the latest technologies available to prevent accidents from happening in the first place. Volvo’s City Safety system, standard in all new Volvos, aims to prevent or reduce the severity of accidents with stopped vehicles or pedestrians when the driver is distracted. Other preventative systems offered on all new Volvos include Emergency Brake Assist, Dynamic Stability and Traction Control, and Electronic Brake Distribution, which work together to help the driver maintain control during emergency maneuvers.
The all-new Volvo XC90 will feature the most recent safety systems, such as Driver Alert Control and Lane Departure Warning, as standard. With recent IIHS crash test results and the all-new Volvo XC90 leading the way, it looks like Volvo has a decent shot of achieving their Vision 2020 goals.
