Volvo announced in May that it will be building its first North American plant in Berkeley County, South Carolina, and now the Swedish car manufacturer may also become the title sponsor of Charleston’s annual WTA tennis event, according to The Post and Courier.
Volvo has not commented on the report, but the possible sponsorship would give Volvo a new way to promote and make its brand more visible in the US, where its goal is to double its sales to more than 100,000 automobiles. Volvo has already agreed to a deal with the Charleston International Airport that will allow it to display vehicles in various locations at the state’s busiest airport, which was also reported by The Post and Courier.
The Berkeley County plant is expected to bring up to 2,000 jobs to the area and would add an estimated $4.8 billion annually to the economy.
Construction of the new plant will begin this fall and it’s expected to become fully operational in 2018.
