If you’re a fan of stop-motion animation and the World’s Greatest Drag Race series by MotorTrend, you should watch the World’s Greatest Drag Race 8 in stop motion.

The most recent of the series, World’s Greatest Drag Race 8, inspired MotorTrend fan Emmanuel Otuonye to recreate the race using stop-motion and his extensive collection of die-cast cars.

Emmanuel used a combination of 1:36 and 1:38 scale models, but he had to make a couple of substitutions for models he didn’t have or own in that size. The Aston Martin Vantage was replaced by a Ford GT, and instead of the Kia Stinger GT he used a Maserati GranTurismo instead. Most of the other cars were there, such as the McLaren 720S and Chevrolet Corvette ZR1.

You can watch it below.

Stop-motion animation is a painstaking process that can eat up huge amounts of time, which is why shooting the scene took 45 minutes even though the clip lasts 16 seconds. And that’s only for shooting the actual footage. Emmanuel said he had to watch the original race over and over again to get the space between cars and camera angles just right. He shot the race on his kitchen floor.

You can tell that Emmanuel knew what he was doing from the final product, as he’s created stop-motion animations before.

Fan-made animations or art can often have a bad reputation for being low quality or self indulgent, but we think some of the best creations come from people’s love of a series like Emmanuel’s tribute.

We hope that Emmanuel might make a habit out of animating the World’s Greatest Drag Race each year.
