Will GM Replace the Express and Savana with an EV Van?
New evidence shows that GM may be considering electrification for its commercial fleet moving forward
Two of GM’s most overlooked vehicles are the Chevrolet Express and the GMC Savana. These two full-size commercial vans consistently bring in sales for the car manufacturer, although some consider them to be a little long in the tooth.
That’s why rumors of GM replacing these vans with a new EV commercial model are creating a lot of buzz.
Electric Innovations: Production of the Chevrolet Bolt to increase, create jobs
The Chevrolet Express and GMC Savana were both introduced right around 1995. Since then, these two models haven’t undergone many major changes, outside of a redesign in 2003.
As such, both models are overdue for a refresh. Yet, evidence suggests that any upcoming changes made to the Express and Savana may be more significant than originally expected.
GM plans to introduce a flexible EV platform to its lineup sometime around 2021. This platform can underpin several different vehicle segments, including light commercial vehicles like the Savana and Express.
There is a chance that this EV commercial van will be a separate model from the Savana and the Express. Still, GM could very well decide to switch out the combustion-powered versions of these vans in favor of something a little more efficient.
Adding Efficiency: 2019 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 gets more efficient
Customers eagerly awaiting an EV version of the Chevy Express or GMC Savana will likely have to wait for some time. GM has confirmed that it plants to produce both vehicles in their current form until at least 2023.
As GM’s strategy shifts towards a more EV-focused outlook, the possibility of the automaker electrifying its commercial fleet becomes an increasingly likely outcome.
