What did it take for the No. 12 Verizon Team Penske Chevrolet car to take the top spot in victory lane at the GoPro Grand Prix of Sonoma?  A whole lot of willpower, and a whole lot of Will Power.

Power, who started the race in third, led the final 16 laps on his way to his 19th career victory and first of the 2013 IZOD IndyCar Series season.  Though the win was Power’s first since April

29, 2012, it was his third in the last four IndyCar races held at Sonoma.

“We’ve had a lot of hard hits and I’m just happy for all the guys. It’s just phenomenal, it’s great for our confidence and we’re back in our winning ways,” Powers said after the race.

The win is the eighth this season for Chevrolet, placing them squarely in the heat of the chase for the 2013 Series’ Manufacturers’ Championship.

“Congratulations to Will Power and the No. 12 Penske Verizon Chevrolet team for their win today at Sonoma Raceway,” said Jim Campbell, U.S. Vice President Performance Vehicles and Motorsports in an official release. “Will persevered, and it was great to see him back in the Winner’s Circle.”

By posting a seventh-place finish, Helio Castroneves, driver of the No. 3 Hitachi Team Penske Chevrolet car, increased his overall lead to 39 points with just four races remaining in the season.  Marco Andretti guided the No.25 RC Cola Andretti Autosport Chevrolet to a fourth place finish and to a retention of the number four overall position, trailing Castroneves by 70 points.  Ryan Hunter-Reay of the No. 1 DHL Andretti Autosport Chevrolet used a sixth-place finish to move to 62 points behind Castroneves in his quest to retain his Series’ championship crown.
