Young professionals in the Badger State want more options for public transportation, according to a new study. The WISPIRG Foundation’s report, entitled “Millennials On the Move,” confirms millennials’ unique attitude toward vehicle ownership.

As WISPIRG Foundation organizer and lead author of the report Emma Fisher put it, “Car culture no longer represents the ‘American Dream’ for many young people.” Instead, young adults are moving away from traditional vehicle ownership and towards cheaper, more eco-friendly options like public transportation. Walking and biking are other popular modes of transit for millennials, according to Fox 11 News.

Stats from the study

The WISPIRG Foundation surveyed more than 600 students from 24 different colleges in Wisconsin for the report. Here are just some of the findings from the study.

  • 55 percent of those surveyed said that they would be more likely to stay in Wisconsin after graduation if they could find a place of residence that was conducive for living without a car.
  • 75 percent claimed it was either “very important” or “somewhat important” to have non-driving transportation options in the place they chose to live after graduating.
  • 76 percent stated that it was “very important” or “somewhat important” to have non-auto transportation choices.

Future implications

Based on the results of the study, the WISPIRG Foundation’s report explicitly encouraged state leaders and key decision makers to increase funding for a variety of non-driving transportation options. The organization also advocated the importance of realigning transportation spending priorities. For instance, the report suggested that the state could allocate funds toward repairing instead of expanding the existing infrastructure.

We anticipate more details in the days ahead as Wisconsin officials and transportation authorities consider the new report’s findings and consider modifying future transportation goals and projects.
