When you first look at a BMW, you might not think that it would make a good canvas—that is, until you see the first BMW Art Car ever created, painted by none other than Alexander Calder. As the first artist commissioned to create an art car in 1975, Calder’s rendition has been the first of seventeen creations completed for BMW Art Car collection, starting a movement towards taking the carmaker’s vehicles, which are art works themselves, and enhancing them with bold colors and graphic designs.

With its contrasting blocks of bright colors spanning across a BMW 3.0 CSL, there’s no surprise that BMW would choose this Art Car as the centerpiece of the class of 3.0 CSLs at the 2014 Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance, celebrating the carmaker’s heritage. Along with this work of art will be a variety of BMW’s own art work in the form of both past and future cars. Joining the ranks of the 1075 Twelve Hours of Sebring and the 1976 Daytona 24 Hour race winners are the all-new M4 and exotic BMW i8, a plug-in hybrid sports car, highlighting the direction BMW is taking in future production.
