The rumors were true: the mysterious performance car that Ford rolled out just days before the Los Angeles Auto Show is, indeed, the 2016 Shelby GT350 Mustang.

It turns out, however, that we all read a bit too much into a video released last week that strongly suggested that the GT350 would be powered by a turbo-four. In fact, it turns out that there was a great amount of truth to rumors from back in September that suggested the 2016 Shelby GT350 Mustang would get a flat-plane crankshaft V8.

Here’s what we’re looking at: an all-new 5.2-liter flat-plane crankshaft V8 that stands as the most powerful naturally aspirated engine that Ford has ever built. How powerful? 500 horsepower and 400+ lb-ft torque powerful. Just listen to this thing.

Mate that to a six-speed manual transmission, a Torsen limited-slip differential, continuously controlled MagneRide dampers, and a new driver control system that lets drivers choose between five driving modes for different conditions, and you’re talking about something that’s positioning itself to become the new track champion for this day and age.

“When we started working on this car, we wanted to build the best possible Mustang for the places we most love to drive – challenging back roads with a variety of corners and elevation changes – and the track on weekends,” said Raj Nair, Ford group vice president, Global Product Development. “Every change we made to this car was driven by the functional requirements of a powerful, responsive powerplant – nimble, precise handling and massive stopping power.”

Other features include a lowered and sloped aluminum hood, a reconfigured face including reshaped aluminum front fenders, and a rear diffuser that make it more aerodynamic than even the 2015 Mustang GT.

On the inside, Ford has outfitted the 2016 Shelby GT350 with unique Recaro seats, flat-bottom steering wheel, upgraded gauges, and a darker appearance with the removal of any glossy or chrome finishes that cause glare.

“We took the best Ford Mustang yet and massaged every aspect of the car that affects the performance driving experience,” said Jamal Hameedi, chief engineer, Ford Global Performance Vehicles. “We tested endlessly on the most challenging roads and tracks in the world, and we believe serious drivers will love the Shelby GT350 Mustang.”

Safe bet, that.
