The 2017 Hyundai Elantra is a small front-wheel drive sedan that has been extensively redesigned for the new model year. Powered by a 147-horsepower four-cylinder motor, the 2017 Elantra provides seating for up to five people and carries a starting MSRP of $17,150. The Elantra competes in the compact sedan segment with the Chevy Cruze, Honda Civic, and Nissan Sentra.

What’s New for the 2017 Hyundai Elantra?

The 2017 Hyundai Elantra is approximately one inch longer and wider than the outgoing model. With the added space, Elantra designers decided to give rear passengers more leg room, which makes riding in the back seats of this compact sedan a bit more tolerable for taller passengers. The new Elantra also features the hexagonal corporate grille that can also be seen on the Tuscon compact SUV. In addition, the 2017 Elantra offers a new four-cylinder engine and its infotainment system will be compatible with both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.

The 2017 Hyundai Elantra comes in three trims: SE, Eco, and Limited. All are offered in standard FWD.

The 2017 Hyundai Elantra offers a more sophisticated and sleek outward appearance than its predecessor. Besides sporting the new hexagonal grille, the new Elantra is available with HID projector headlights with dynamic bending light and automatic high beam assist. The 2017 Elantra comes standard with 15-inch steel wheels, but if consumers choose to open up their wallets for the top-level Limited model, then the Elantra will come with 17-inch alloy wheels, as well as LED taillights and chrome body trim. Exterior color options for the new Elantra include Electric Blue, Red, Silver, Black, and Beige.

The 2017 Hyundai Elantra comes standard with a new 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine rated at 147 horsepower and 132 lb-ft of torque. A new Eco trim level has been added for the 2017 model year and will be available in the spring of 2016. That Eco model will be powered by a 1.4-liter four-cylinder turbo engine good for 128 horsepower and 156 lb-ft of torque. The Eco model is only available with a seven-speed twin-clutch transmission. The Limited trim comes standard with a six-speed automatic, while the base SE offers the choice between the six-speed automatic and a six-speed manual transmission.

Efficiency for the 2017 Hyundai Elantra varies depending on which engine, transmission, and wheels are used with the car. With the six-speed automatic transmission and standard 15-inch wheels, the Elantra SE yields an EPA-estimated 29 mpg in the city and 38 mpg on the highway. The EPA hasn’t rated the fuel efficiency of the new Elantra Eco model, but Hyundai has estimated it should return 35 mpg combined. The new Elantra comes standard with a 14 gallon gas tank.

Consumers will find 14.4 cubic feet of storage space in the trunk of the 2017 Elantra sedan. The 2016 Hyundai Elantra was named a Top Safety Pick Plus by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). The 2017 version uses more high-strength steel than last year’s model and 53% of the vehicle has been reinforced with it. The new Elantra also offers many advanced safety technologies, including blind-spot warning with rear cross traffic alert, forward collision warning, automatic braking with pedestrian detection, lane keeping assist, and lane change alert.
