“For Mazda’s bargain throwback roadster, this is nothing new, having won our award numerous times before, including last year when they added the RF to the lineup,” says MotorWeek. “This year, Mazda finally got serious about giving us more horsepower. Now, the additional 26 ponies may not be enough for some, but they suited us just fine, providing more oomph, without overpowering the Miata’s fantastic chassis. Still frugal, still fun, and still a top down winner.”
The added horsepower praised by MotorWeek editors is thanks to the new SKYACTIV-G 2.0-liter engine. Also new on the 2019 award-winning convertible are available driver assist technologies like Smart City Brake Support, Lane-Departure Warning System, and Blind Spot Monitoring with Rear Cross-Traffic Alert. An Adaptive Front Lighting System is also available as part of the updates to Mazda’s i- ACTIVESENSE technologies. A rearview camera is now standard.
“Getting behind the wheel of a Mazda Miata MX-5 is an exhilarating experience which provides the freedom of exploration to those who love driving. The Miata has always been focused on providing an elegant and intuitive vehicle to all drivers,” said Masahiro Moro, CEO of Mazda North American Operations and senior managing executive officer of Mazda Motor Corporation. “The Miata is a legendary vehicle, and we are continuously innovating and improving to provide passengers the joy of driving for years to come.”
