Green Car Journal has named the refreshed 2020 Honda CR-V and its all-new CR-V Hybrid model the 2020 Green SUV of the Year. It marks the sixth time Honda earns recognition from the publication and the second that an SUV takes top honors.
Launched last month, the 2020 Honda CR-V features exterior styling tweaks and upgraded features compared to the 2019 model, including a more powerful 1.5-liter turbo engine for the LX trim. The CR-V Hybrid, on the other hand, is completely new and will launch in early 2020. It will be Honda’s first hybrid SUV sold in America, and Honda expects it will quickly become its best-selling hybrid model overall.
“Honda’s CR-V is already efficient as a conventionally-powered model and well-established as a driver favorite,” said Ron Cogan, editor and publisher of Green Car Journal. “The addition of a new all-wheel drive CR-V using Honda’s proven two-motor hybrid system is an exceptional move, offering buyers an even more compelling reason to consider this award-winning model at the showroom.”

Those paying attention will not be surprised to see Honda featured in Green Car Journal’s annual awards, as the automaker was recently recognized by the United States Environmental Protection Agency as having a higher fleet-average fuel economy than any automaker.
When equipped with the turbocharged 1.5-liter engine, the Honda CR-V gets an EPA-estimated 28 mpg in the city, 34 mpg on the highway, and 30 mpg combined. We’re not sure how efficient the CR-V Hybrid will be yet, but Honda says it should boost the regular CR-V’s mileage by about 50 percent. This would put it slightly above its main competitor, the Toyota RAV4 Hybrid.
Honda plans to have two-thirds of its global sales be electrified, and to halve its CO2 emissions by 2050 compared to its 2000 levels.
