A more intuitive naming system
The previous base-trim model of the GMC Sierra HD didn’t have a real moniker. Instead, it was interchangeably referred to as the “base” or the “Sierra,” which could potentially lead to some confusion when discussing trim levels.
That’s all about to change. From 2022 onward, the entry-level models of the 2022 GMC Sierra 2500HD and the 2022 GMC Sierra 3500HD will be referred to as the Sierra Pro. GM Authority speculates that this name comes from the fact that base-trim HD models are a popular pick among contractors.
Future of the Sierra HD
It’s likely that the 2022 Sierra HD will largely be a carryover model, with only minor improvements from the previous iteration of the vehicle. As a result, we’re expecting it to retain the naturally aspirated 6.6-liter gas-powered V8 that channels 401 horsepower and 464 lb-ft of torque through a six-speed automatic transmission. The 6.6-liter turbo-diesel V8 should also stick around. This diesel dynamo is good for 445 horsepower and 910 lb-ft of torque, and it pairs with a 10-speed automatic gearbox. The 2022 model may also sport minor pricing, aesthetic, comfort, and technology updates, but only time will tell.
Further down the line, the Sierra HD is slated for a mid-cycle refresh that includes significant powertrain updates. Although these updates are scheduled for 2023, it’s entirely possible that they’ll be delayed until 2024.
While we don’t have any concrete facts about the updates coming to the Sierra HD, we can make a few educated guesses. Since the Sierra HD often follows in the footsteps of the Sierra 1500, we can look ahead to the light-duty truck’s 2022 mid-cycle refresh for some clues. The Sierra 1500 is expected to gain a facelift, a completely redesigned interior, and the introduction of Super Cruise on Denali models, so it wouldn’t be surprising for the HD model to follow suit.
