4 Car Museums in Maine
Visitors flock to Maine for its fresh lobster, diverse landscapes, and beautiful lighthouses and beaches. Among all that nature you will also find several car museums scattered through the Pine Tree State, including the following four.
Stanley Museum

The Stanley family is famous for the invention of the Stanley Steamer steam car. The Stanley Museum in Kingfield is housed within the Stanley School, which was built in 1903 and named after the Stanley family in 1905. The museum is home to Stanley steam cars from 1905, 1910, and 1916, as well as a 20-horsepower steam engine, photographs telling the family’s story, and examples of violins made by the Stanley family. The museum’s hours change depending on the season, so make sure you check the website before visiting.

Seal Cove Auto Museum

Located on Mount Desert Island in the village of Seal Cove, the Seal Cove Auto Museum is just a 20-minute drive from Bar Harbor. The collection includes vehicles from 1895 through the early 1920s, including a 1916 Abbott Detroit, a 1911 Buick, and a 1904 Cadillac. The museum is open between May and October.
Cole Land Transportation Museum
If you want to see more than just cars, head to the Cole Land Transportation Museum in Bangor. On display, you’ll see a Maine Central Railroad caboose car that includes a flush toilet, electric lights, an oil stove, bunks, a water cooler, and an ice box. Other vehicles on display include farm machinery, vintage fire engines, snowplows, and classic trucks. The museum is open seasonally from May 1-Nov. 11, seven days a week from 9 a.m.-5 p.m.

Owls Head Transportation Museum

The Owls Head Transportation Museum is a collection of over 150 antique aircraft, cars, motorcycles, engines, and more. Automobiles range in years from 1886 to 1963 and include a 1902 Curved Dash Oldsmobile, a 1923 Cretors Popcorn Wagon, and a 1939 Packard Town Car. The Owls Head Transportation Museum is open year-round, seven days a week from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. (closed New Year’s Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas).
