Whether you’re going away for a few days on business or taking the trip of a lifetime for a month, chances are you’ll use an airport parking facility (and possibly use Parkos to find the best parking) at some point during your life. Leaving your car unattended while you’re out of town can be a scary prospect, particularly if you’re parking at a large airport with high traffic. Rather than worrying about the wellbeing of your car and its content, follow these four tips to help make sure your airport parking experience is a safe one.

Keep your stuff out of sight

That old duffel bag you keep in your car for emergencies might be empty, but a car thief doesn’t know that. Likewise, a blanket or coat lurking behind the driver’s seat could easily be covering up a prized possession that a thief could use to make a pretty penny. Before leaving your car, make sure you’ve hidden any items in your trunk so they’re out of the line of sight. Better yet, empty out your car of unnecessary items before heading to the airport.

Remove valuables

It goes without saying, but you should never leave valuables in your car — particularly when parking at an airport. A GPS unit or a pair of designer sunglasses will easily catch the eye of a thief. Take your valuables with you while you travel. If you don’t need them on your trip, leave them at home.

Secure your car

Before you bid farewell to your vehicle, make sure you’ve rolled up the windows completely and locked all the doors. A cracked window could catch the eye of someone looking for an easy mark. It’s better to double check this stuff before you head into the airport rather than second guess whether or not you remembered to hit the lock button as you struggled to the elevator with your suitcase.

Park in a high-traffic area

When parking in your chosen spot, park with your trunk facing out so it’s more visible to passersby and harder to break into unseen. Look for a well-lit spot where there are plenty of cars around. If you can park within sight of the exit booths or parking office, even better. The more visible your car is, the less likely it is to be the target of a thief.

No matter how long you plan to leave your car at airport parking, it’s important to make sure you’re leaving it in as safe a manner as possible.
